Water is not merely a natural resource. It is the foundation of life, public health, food security, livelihoods and civilization itself. Yet in India, something that should be treated as a fundamental necessity is increasingly becoming a scarce and unequal commodity.
The warning signs are no longer distant. India continues to face severe challenges related to water quality, groundwater depletion, pollution and unequal access. Millions live under significant water stress, while unsafe drinking water continues to contribute to disease and preventable deaths. If present patterns of consumption, pollution and mismanagement continue, the gap between what we need and what we can sustainably supply will become increasingly difficult to bridge.
The most frightening part is not simply the shortage. It is the contradiction.
While communities struggle to secure drinking water and farmers worry about irrigation, we are simultaneously planning massive infrastructure projects whose water and energy requirements can be enormous. India is rapidly becoming an important destination for data centres, with global technology companies investing billions in digital infrastructure.
Digital growth is important. Investment is important. Technology is important.
But development cannot be measured only in gigabytes, servers and billions of dollars.
A data centre may represent the future of technology, but it still requires the most basic resource on earth—water. When large industrial or digital facilities are established in regions already experiencing water stress, the question cannot simply be, How much investment will this bring?
The question must also be:
How much water will it consume, where will that water come from, and who will bear the cost when the resource runs short?
This is particularly important for cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad, where rapid urbanisation, climate pressures and groundwater depletion have already exposed the fragility of urban water systems. Technology cannot be allowed to advance by transferring its environmental cost to ordinary citizens, farmers and future generations.
India needs investment, but it needs responsible investment.
And then there is Kashmir.
Aab in Kashmir: An Inheritance Under Threat
Kashmir has historically been blessed with an extraordinary water ecosystem—glacier-fed rivers, springs, streams, lakes, wetlands and snow-fed catchments. For generations, communities lived alongside these water systems, depending on them for drinking water, agriculture, livestock and livelihoods.
Our ancestors understood something that modern planning often forgets:
A stream is not empty land. A wetland is not wasteland. A spring is not merely a source of water.
They are part of a living system.
Yet the Valley is witnessing rapid construction and urban expansion, including development around fragile water bodies, streams and wetlands. When construction encroaches upon natural drainage channels, the consequences are predictable. A blocked stream eventually searches for another path. A filled wetland eventually loses its capacity to absorb excess water. A destroyed spring eventually stops serving the community that depended upon it.
And then, when floods come, we call them natural disasters.
Sometimes they are.
But sometimes the disaster begins much earlier—with a file, a permission, an ignored regulation and a construction project in the wrong place.
The lesson is simple: nature keeps its accounts.
We may postpone the bill, but we cannot cancel it.
Kashmir does not merely need more water schemes. It needs a stronger water conscience. We must stop looking at every piece of land beside a stream, lake or wetland as an opportunity for construction.
Development should create resilience, not vulnerability.
From Permission to Responsibility
Across India, we have gradually developed a dangerous habit of equating economic activity with progress. If a project brings investment, jobs or infrastructure, we often stop asking difficult questions about its long-term ecological cost.
But a project is not sustainable simply because it is legal.
And legality is not the same as wisdom.
A hotel built beside a fragile stream may generate revenue today, but if it obstructs a natural water channel and contributes to flooding tomorrow, who pays the price?
A factory may create employment, but if it contaminates groundwater, who compensates the families that can no longer safely drink it?
A technology facility may bring billions in investment, but if its water demand intensifies shortages for surrounding communities, can we honestly call that development sustainable?
These are not anti-development questions.
They are pro-future questions.
Aab Must Become a National Priority
India’s water crisis cannot be solved by governments alone. It requires a partnership between policymakers, scientists, businesses, farmers, communities and citizens.
We need stronger protection for wetlands and water bodies. We need scientific urban planning. We need rainwater harvesting to move from policy documents to ground reality. We need serious groundwater management. We need industries to disclose and reduce their water footprint. And most importantly, we need to stop treating natural water systems as obstacles to development.
Every lake cannot become real estate.
Every wetland cannot become a construction site.
Every stream cannot be narrowed, diverted or buried.
Every aquifer cannot be treated as an unlimited underground tank.
And every drought cannot be answered by drilling another borewell.
Kashmir’s water wealth is not something we created. It is an inheritance placed in our hands by generations of nature and history.
We did not earn this water. We inherited it.
The real question is whether we will pass it on.
India’s future will not be secured only by highways, airports, industries, data centres and smart cities. It will depend just as much on whether our rivers continue to flow, our springs continue to rise, our wetlands continue to breathe and our people continue to have access to safe drinking water.
Because when the last spring dries, the last wetland disappears and the last clean source is polluted, no amount of economic growth will be able to manufacture what nature once gave us freely.
Aab is life.
Aab is security.
Aab is our inheritance.
And protecting it is not environmental activism—it is survival.
